On Collective Care: ti-TCR 20 Call for Submissions

We are looking for a language that already exists. The immortality of translation makes it so. No nihilism may survive the rushing waters of this plenitude. I am brimming with the solace of surrender, the reverence of leaning in and seeping out—that I might live another day to gaze at the altitude of desire, beyond the gardens of grief at my shore.

—Christina Hajjar, Edging in the Abyss

The Capilano Review invites submissions for its forthcoming ti-TCR web folio, On Collective Care, edited by Emma Jeffrey.

What purpose does writing serve in times of collective grief? Drawing upon grassroots liberation movements and models for solidarity-building, this forthcoming web folio will explore literary practice as a tool to expand our capacity for empathy and care on a collective scale.

As we navigate white supremacist systems of capitalism, many of us have become desensitized from the pressures of living in a constant crisis state. This forthcoming issue of ti-TCR will explore the ways in which we can foster practices of community care in our daily lives which disrupt frameworks of individualism and scarcity. What are the tangible ways that we uplift and are uplifted by others in times of great despair? How can the process of artistic creation focus our resolve and unite us collectively around a shared purpose?

It is most evident in times of economic and social collapse that we all share the responsibility of creating positive change. Why write poetry during the apocalypse, if not for the hope of a kinder world?
