The Capilano Review (TCR) seeks a Managing Editor beginning April 1, 2024. In addition to excellent writing skills and a knowledge of and enthusiasm for the literary and visual arts, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in marketing, digital strategy, and project management.

Note: This position requires in-person work at our Vancouver office.

Annual salary:

$42,471.37 for part-time status (26 hours/week) with 4 weeks of paid vacation time and a monthly benefits allowance of $65. An annual cost-of-living salary increase of 4.35% will take effect on January 1st of each year, subject to Board budgetary approval.

Job Description:

Working alongside the Literary and Art Editors, the Managing Editor supervises all of the magazine’s operations on a practical level, including the management of the magazine’s circulation, distribution, and subscriptions. They contribute to the production process by overseeing the front and back matter for each issue and, where needed, design consultation and copyediting/proofreading. They are responsible for the magazine’s overall social health and vibrancy by managing our marketing, communications, and social media accounts.

Subscription, Circulation, Marketing

● Manage publication circulation and distribution

● Manage all print and digital subscriptions, maintaining our CRM subscriber database, and implement strategies to grow our readership

● Work with the Editors to plan and execute marketing, advertising, and distribution initiatives

● Design promotional materials for TCR’s year-round programming initiatives

Administration & Bookkeeping

● Serve as the primary point of contact for TCR, answering general queries regarding submissions, contests, etc., and directing specific queries to the relevant colleague

● Assist the Editors with grant writing and reporting

● Fulfill orders and perform basic bookkeeping, banking, invoicing, filing, and administrative duties (Quickbooks, Sync)

Production & Editorial

● Serve as the main point of contact with the printer and distributor and ensure that publication issues are distributed in a timely and professional manner

● Oversee the front and back matter of all issues, including advertisements, contributor bios, and donor acknowledgements

● Contribute to the proofreading stage of each issue in production

● Collaborate with the Editors to develop new See to see— and From the Archives web features

Communications & Website

● Create promotional copy and graphics

● Compose and send e-newsletters

● Maintain TCR’s social media presence (Facebook, Instagram, X) and schedule ongoing content (Loomly)

● Manage all aspects of the website and its maintenance, ensuring pages are up-to-date and functioning, monitoring online orders and payments, and liaising with our Web Developer on ongoing site improvements

Outreach & Events

● Carry out operational aspects of in-person and digital events (venues, licencing, ticketing, promotions)

● Manage donation campaigns and donor appreciation

● Represent TCR at book fairs and other events

● Mentor interns as needed

Qualifications:

● Familiarity with The Capilano Review and our community of writers and artists, with particular knowledge of and interest in BC’s arts and cultural community

● Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write copy for monthly newsletters, advertisements, and other promotional material, as well as the ability to copy edit and proofread content as needed (familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style an asset)

● Experience with administration, marketing, and project management

● Experience with subscription, membership, and/or donor management (familiarity with CRM subscriber software an asset)

● Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel), Mailchimp, and WordPress platforms

● Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and the ability to design simple outbound ads for print and online an asset

● Professional manner in customer relations

● Strong attention to detail and the ability to multitask

● Ability to work independently as well as with a team
