6:00 – 9:00 pm
W Room, Woodward’s Heritage Building
111 West Hastings Street, Vancouver
Workshop Fee: $30*
Of the many Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action released in 2015, more than one recommendation speaks to language revitalization. When Indigenous languages are revitalized, so is the understanding embedded in indigenous worldviews that the history of land, language, and community are all interconnected. For those of us (indigenous and non-indigenous allies) who are disconnected from indigenous languages, the TRC’s call to action may prompt the question: What can I do to further indigenous language revitalization?
In this workshop, artist and writer Michelle Sylliboy will share her revitalization work with the Mi’kmaq (L’nuk) language. She will also introduce the Mi’kmaq (L’nuk) philosophy of non-interference she uses in her pedagogy which can be summed up as a mode that encourages us to pay attention and follow the process, and allow and support what wants to emerge. In the writing portion of the workshop, participants will explore ways to respectfully support indigenous language revitalization in their own writing practice.
Workshop participants are asked to bring a notebook, writing utensil and an open mind. Light refreshments will be provided.
